RAISED VEGETABLE GARDEN PLANTERS
Background
I am born and raised in Colorado, just a few miles where where I currently reside. A few things have changed over the years, mostly things have gotten over complicated. With less time, and fewer resources people have drifted away from some of our valuable heritage. And one of the more vital things that seems to have been lost is the harvestable home garden.
Gone, it seems are the halcion days of my youth, where every backyard had a garden, flower beds, and fruit trees. And although sometimes these were just for display, there wasn't quite the pristine, sterile “landscaping” that is popular now. People would harvest the peaches and apples, not look at them as some inconvience. And I remember the tomatoes the most.
In our modern reality of Safeway and King Sooper's, we have forgotten what real food tastes like. Do you remember the last homegrown tomato you had? If you do then you will know that these days what is readily avaible in supermarkets as “tomatos” are pieces of expensive cardboard. That truth exists from strawberrys to onions, and fresh herbs to peaches and plums. Homegrown tastes better.
Of course you could go the organic supermarket route, assuming you have deep pockets. But there is more to know. Where was this food grown? In Asia, Europe, South America? And when was it grown? Your fresh lettuce may be weeks old. The next avacado you buy could have been shpped a thousands of miles. From the coporation using pestecides and altered genes, through various modes transport using tons of fuel, to the cooling costs at numerous points. The carbon footprint of the global food distribution system is poor, at best.
However there is another option, grow your own, and embrace the simple life. That's where I can help.
Container Gardening.
A view years ago at the request of my wife, I began to prototype the contruction of several planter boxes. There were a few constraints:
They had to be:
- Realatively mobile.
- Completely constructed of recycled or reclaimed material.
- Functional ergonomics (easy to water and care for)
- Biologically sound (no chemically processed wood, proper depth for plants specifics)
